Funding - A Targeted Approach
Limited Capacity seats available

Understanding The Investor: Sales, hiring, marketing - these are all a numbers game. Finding funding, though, should not be. Often, successfully funded companies did not take a "shotgun" approach to their funding needs. Rather they focused on preparing themselves for specific investors. Knowing what your investor is looking for (or not looking for) in their portfolio. Understanding stage and what most resonates with specific investors takes a lot of research and dialog but can save a lot of wasted cycles.

SuccessLab
Limited Capacity full

The SuccessLab is where entrepreneurs collaborate to achieve greatness. The goal of this one-hour mastermind is to bring entrepreneurs together to discuss ideas and challenges you may be experience in your business, and collectively come up with solutions to help one another conquer those challenges. Hopefully you also walk away with a new mastermind group you can continue to collaborate and grow with.

In the SuccessLab, entrepreneurs:
  • Work through challenges by harnessing the power of the collective
  • Discuss solutions, tips, tools, and resources
  • Gain a sounding board or possibly a board of directors
  • Overcome obstacles through accountability
  • Take massive action (with set action items) in reaching your goals
Space is limited to six entrepreneurs. In the interest of time we may open the dialogue online prior to the session to get everyone familiar and comfortable with each other.

Lunch & Learn - 10 Things I Learned in a Silicon Valley Accelerator...and that AZ Startups MUST KNOW
Limited Capacity full

In 2014, my startup Allbound was selected to participate in Acceleprise, a Silicon Valley accelerator program focused on helping enterprise SaaS companies grow. So I picked-up my family and moved to SF for a 4-month adventure of a lifetime.

And now that I'm back, boy do I have stories to tell - from the people I met and the best practices I learned to pitch contests and one-on-one experiences of pitching in front of some of the top VCs and angels in Silicon Valley.

Silicon Valley was NOT a master planned community - and neither is Phoenix. But there's a reason it got to where it is. And a reason that "the Valley" had nearly 800 VC deals in 2013 while our Valley had 12. And I got to live and breath a lot of those reasons when I took my startup West for a few months.

Not only did the unforgettable Matthew Lesko figure out how to bootstrap a company, he essentially figured out how to bootstrap life!  Over the years he has taught millions of others to do the same through his famed books and infomercials.  These days, he's busy helping entrepreneurs around the world create more success. And, he's taking questions.

Armed with a MBA in computerized management information systems (paid for thanks to government money because of his service as a Naval Officer in the Vietnam War), Lesko became a professor in computer science and started a career as an entrepreneur. His first two businesses failed - one of which was a software company. His next company was a successful consulting business that helped Fortune 500 companies tap government programs to finance mergers and acquisitions and enter new markets. In a few short years, this business grew from Matthew + a phone and a desk in a one-room apartment to 30 researchers in downtown Washington, DC.

Matthew then left the corporate world to educate the average consumer how they, too, could use government programs to help their lives. He has written over 100 books on the subject of free money. Two became New York Times Bestsellers. He was also a columnist for the New York Times Syndicate and Good Housekeeping magazine. He has appeared on hundreds of radio and TV shows and made regular appearances on Letterman, Larry King, Leno, CNN, Fox, The Today Show, Good Morning America and Oprah. His crazy TV infomercials were among the most popular in the industry and he is often recognized on the street because Lesko always wears Question Mark Suits.

Analyzing a Competitive Landscape
Limited Capacity full

Every startup has competition. If it doesn't have competition, then one of two things are true: 1) They are attacking a market/problem that is too hard to attack. 2) They are not really defining the solution broadly enough to include competitors. It is not always obvious that certain competitors are actually competitors. But willing to look at the market holistically is a key talent for any founder, analyst, or startup marketing professional. This talk explores how to look at a competitive landscape and understand where a startup fits into that market segment.

Human Capital as a Growth Accelerator - Building the Right Teams to Increase the ROI of Your People
Limited Capacity filling up

It’s never too early to start managing people, your most important asset

Increase the ROI of your people investment. Focus on improving financial results by unlocking human capital potential.

Start-up and high-growth companies, by their very nature, are fast-paced and change continually. Every person in every role will make a critical, strategic difference. There is no room for error and no place to hide.

Start-up and growth companies benefit in 2 ways:

1. Strategy and Leadership & Role Alignment
Clear role assessments together with objective, strategically-benchmarked competencies, properly aligned, can prevent missed opportunities.

2. Create a Sustainable, High-Performance Culture
Culture can be very fragile in start-up and growth companies because change is constant and dynamic. Creating a high-performance culture right from the beginning must be a strategic initiative. How to make it happen everyday is part of our approach.

How to Negotiate Contracts

Contracts are a daily part of every business owner’s life. When economic times were good, many owners ignored contractual formalities and some even abandoned written agreements altogether. During the days of abundant (and seemingly unending) profits, “handshake deals” often became the norm.

Creative City: How Architecture Impacts Collaboration
Limited Capacity seats available

How does our city impact creativity? How does space impact collaboration? Turns out having a casual conversation while grabbing a coffee, chatting while waiting for the light rail or having a lively debate with your work-neighbor can all add up to greater connection, collaboration and creativity. On the flip side, also providing spaces to escape beyond the international “I’m working” headphones can also offer much needed moments to reflect and dive deep into your work. Influencing all of these – often without our knowledge and certainly more than fate – is architecture. This presentation will focus on how architecture and design can impact teams’ creativity and collaboration. We will discuss designing for creativity from the perspective of the city as well as interior workspaces. We will also cover how sustainability makes a difference and what sustainability means in our own special desert city, Phoenix.

Design, now more than ever, has been thrust into the spotlight and touted as a pillar for some of the most successful businesses in our era. Because of this, startups are being taught not to overlook their brand and to value design thinking rather than overlooking it. What they aren't taught however is how to approach designers to become a part of their team. I'd like to discuss the things to consider when approaching creative talent and recommend ways to do it.
